Long jump from a running approach
When to use this goal
For students who can do a standing jump and are ready for a running long jump on field day, in a track unit or in a unified track program. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. A wide takeoff zone instead of a board keeps the event fair while timing develops.
- Baseline
- Score the skill on the rubric across at least 3 PE sessions before setting a target, filming a few attempts if the family and school allow it so two scorers can agree. Score each component from what is seen, not from whether the ball went where it should. Measure the runway length used so later probes match.
- Tips
- Distance can be recorded alongside the rubric for students who enjoy beating a mark, but the goal is form. A wide zone removes the fear of fouling. Unified track programs give a reason to keep practicing outside PE.
- Limits
- Scores form, not distance. Students with joint or bone conditions need medical clearance for repeated landings. It does not cover sprint starts or relays.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 4 jumps into a sand pit from a short runway with a wide takeoff zone, the student will run in, take off from one foot inside the zone, drive the arms and knee up, and land on two feet independently, earning a score of at least 6 out of 8 on a 4-component running long jump rubric scored 0 to 2 per component, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks during track units.
