Ask a question about the story during reading
When to use this goal
For young students who listen passively during reading and do not wonder about what will happen or why. Asking a question is an early sign of active comprehension. Present levels in language decide the support level.
- Baseline
- Count questions linked to the story; off-topic questions do not count. Note whether the student makes statements instead of questions.
- Tips
- Model wondering aloud. Students who use AAC can have question words on their device.
- Limits
- Question quality varies; this goal counts relevant questions, not deep ones.

- Record up to 4 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
