Yes or no questions about an adapted story

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students with complex communication needs whose most reliable response is yes or no, who are ready to show understanding of a short adapted story. Present levels in communication decide the response mode.

Baseline
Balance yes and no answers, since chance is 50%. Confirm the response mode with known questions first. Scores near half suggest guessing.
Tips
Use stories the student chose or that relate to their life. Plan with the SLP. Move to picture-choice answers when ready.
Limits
Yes or no shows recognition; use enough items to rule out chance.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after a read-aloud of a short adapted story with picture symbols, given 8 yes or no questions, the student will answer each question yes or no using their reliable response mode independently in at least 7 of 8 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 4 of 8 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
