Explain the message of a political cartoon

9-12, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students who describe what is drawn in a political cartoon but miss the symbols and the message. Cartoons are common primary sources and test items. Present levels decide supports.

Baseline
Use cartoons on topics the class has studied. Score symbols, labels, and message separately.
Tips
Pairs with figurative language and author's purpose work. Students with vision needs may need enlarged or described images.
Limits
Historical cartoons need background knowledge; provide a context note.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a historical or current political cartoon with a caption and 4 questions, the student will identify the symbols and labels, explain what each stands for, and state the cartoonist's message independently with at least 80% accuracy on cartoon analysis questions, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 35% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Comprehension.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
