Build a CVC word chain with tiles

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For beginning readers who can blend CVC words but do not yet notice which letter changed from one word to the next, so they reread each word from scratch or guess. Building a chain (cat, cap, map, mop) makes them attend to every position. Present levels decide the letter set.

Baseline
Score each link correct when the student changes only the right tile and reads the word. Tally errors by position; middle-vowel changes are usually hardest. Note if the student clears the board and rebuilds each time.
Tips
Chaining moves fast and needs few materials. The oral version lives in phonological awareness; this one ties the change to letters. Pairs with the CVC blending template.
Limits
Mixes spelling and reading. Chains are predictable; vary the position that changes.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given letter tiles and a spoken chain of 8 CVC words in which each word differs from the one before by one sound, the student will change one tile to make each new word and read the new word aloud independently in at least 7 of 8 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 8 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
