Choose the spoken word among printed look-alikes

3-5, K-2, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who do not speak, or whose speech is hard to score, who are ready to show decoding of words that cannot be pictured. The student hears a word and chooses it from printed words that differ by one letter or pattern. Present levels in access decide the field size.

Baseline
Make every distractor differ by one letter or pattern so the student must decode all parts. Record the access method and time per item.
Tips
Works for function words and abstract words that pictures cannot show. Plan with the SLP and AT team.
Limits
This is receptive word identification, which is easier than reading aloud. Chance is 25% with four choices.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken word and 4 printed decodable words that differ by one letter (such as ship, chip, shop, shin), the student will select the printed word that matches the spoken word independently in at least 9 of 12 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 12 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?
