Decode unfamiliar words in community print

9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students who decode in lessons but avoid or guess at unfamiliar words on menus, notices, and flyers in the community. Present levels should show the routine works in lessons.

Baseline
Use photos for most data and confirm in the community. Record strategy use and word accuracy.
Tips
Choose places the student goes. Text-to-speech on a phone is a fine backup; plan both.
Limits
Community print includes brand names and irregular words; mark words that are decodable for probes.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during community-based instruction, when the student meets an unfamiliar word on a menu, notice, or flyer, the student will apply the taught decoding routine and read the word aloud independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
