Stay with the group during choral reading

When to use this goal

For students who fall silent, fall behind, or race ahead during whole-class or small-group choral reading, which is a common fluency routine in primary classrooms. Base the choice on observation during the routine; it suits students who read the text but cannot yet match a group's pace.

Baseline
Each sentence or line is one opportunity; mark it when the student is reading aloud and within a word of the group. Observe three sessions and note the pattern: silent, behind, or ahead. Make sure the text is one the student can read alone at a reasonable accuracy.
Tips
Choral reading gives many repetitions with low pressure, and this goal makes participation measurable. Start with paired reading and move to the group. Use the same short poem for a week so the student gains familiarity.
Limits
Hearing one voice in a group is hard; sit close or use the paired condition for data. Staying with the group can be done by mumbling along; check accuracy separately. Does not measure independent fluency.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during small-group choral reading of a familiar instructional-level passage divided into 10 sentences, the student will read each sentence aloud in time with the group, staying within a word of the group's pace independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed sessions, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Fluency.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
