Name the letters in their first name
When to use this goal
For students at the very start of alphabet learning, as shown by an inventory with few or no letters named. A child's own name is the most meaningful first letter set. Base the choice on the student's interest in their name.
- Baseline
- Each opportunity is one complete attempt at the whole name; count it correct only when every letter is named in order. Over three days, record which letters the student gets and whether the first letter is the only one known. Check that the student can also find their name among three name cards.
- Tips
- Collect data during a real routine (sign-in, cubby, name chart) so practice happens daily without a separate session. Once the name is secure, move to a general letter-naming goal using these letters as the known set. Families can practice this at home with a name card.
- Limits
- A short name gives little data and a long name is harder, so targets are not comparable across students. Naming the letters of one memorized word does not show general letter knowledge; the student may be reciting a sequence. Some students know their name as a whole shape without knowing the letters.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a name card with the student's first name printed in uppercase and lowercase, the student will point to and name each letter in their first name from left to right independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily during arrival or sign-in.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Letter Names & Sounds.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
