Say the keyword and sound for a letter
When to use this goal
For preschoolers and kindergartners who are learning letter sounds with keyword pictures (a, apple, /a/) and who need the keyword as a bridge to the sound. Present levels decide which letters are in the set; start with letters in the student's name and high-use consonants.
- Baseline
- Probe each letter once. Score the keyword and the sound separately; some children know the keyword but not the sound. Note sound errors such as adding a vowel (/muh/), which are common and can be taught.
- Tips
- Keep one keyword per letter across home and school. Children who do not speak can point to the keyword picture and use a device or sign for the sound; adjust the behavior wording when that is the plan.
- Limits
- The keyword step is a bridge to drop later. Some keywords start with blends or unclear sounds; choose clear ones.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a letter card from the taught set of 10, with the keyword picture shown on a separate card, the student will say the letter's keyword and then its sound (such as m, moon, /m/) independently with at least 80% accuracy on letters with keyword and sound given, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Letter Names & Sounds.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
