Say the letter sound when the song stops

When to use this goal

For preschoolers who join alphabet songs but sing them as one long string and do not link a letter to its sound. A song with pauses gives many quick chances. Present levels decide the letter set.

Baseline
Pick 8 pauses per song on taught letters. Sit near the child so you can hear their response in the group. Note whether the child names the letter instead of its sound.
Tips
Short, playful, daily practice. The same song can be sent home. Children who use AAC can have letter sounds programmed on their device.
Limits
Group responses are hard to hear; use the one-to-one condition for cleaner data. Song pauses can be predictable; vary the order.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a group alphabet sound song, when the adult stops on a letter card from the taught set and pauses, the student will say, sign, or select the letter's sound before the song continues independently in at least 6 of 8 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed song times, as measured by direct observation collected daily during group time.

Baseline: 1 of 8 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Letter Names & Sounds.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.
