Trace a letter while saying its sound

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young children learning their first letter sounds who benefit from moving while they learn. Tracing in sand, on a textured card, or in the air ties the shape to the sound. Present levels in fine motor skills decide the tracing material.

Baseline
Score a trial correct when the start point, direction, and sound are all right. Record each part separately to see which needs work. Hand-over-hand help counts as not independent.
Tips
Coordinate with the OT for children with motor needs. Air writing or a large-arm movement works when tracing materials are not a fit.
Limits
Combines motor and sound learning; a child may know the sound but struggle with tracing. Handwriting goals measure formation more closely.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a textured or sand-tray letter from the taught set and the direction to trace it and say its sound, the student will trace the letter from the start dot in the right direction while saying its sound independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Letter Names & Sounds.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
