Say the sound while writing the letter

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For kindergarten and first-grade students who write letters without linking them to sounds, or who start letters in the wrong place. Saying the sound during writing ties both together. Present levels in handwriting and letter sounds decide the letter set.

Baseline
Watch the start point as the letter is written; the finished letter does not show it. Score start point, letter shape, and sound together, and note which part is missing.
Tips
Pairs with OT handwriting goals when formation is the main need. Use consistent verbal paths for each letter.
Limits
Observing start points takes close attention; small groups make it hard. The goal does not measure letter size or spacing.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a lined page and a spoken direction to write a letter from the taught set, the student will write the letter from the correct starting point while saying its sound independently in at least 9 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Letter Names & Sounds.
