Find a classmate's name by first letter

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For kindergarten students who know several letters but do not use them to find words, such as names on cubbies, charts, or attendance cards. Using a first letter is an early print skill. Present levels decide the number of names in the set.

Baseline
Choose name sets with different first letters at first; names that share a first letter come later. Note whether the student picks by length or picture.
Tips
Classmates' names are meaningful print. Children who do not speak can point to the letter on an alphabet strip and then to the card.
Limits
Name sets are small and familiar; generalization to other words needs checking.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during the morning routine, given 6 classmates' name cards and a spoken name, the student will say the first sound or letter of the spoken name and pick the name card that starts with that letter independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.
