Name the device in a figurative sentence

3-5, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who read figurative phrases literally and cannot yet tell a simile from a metaphor, personification or hyperbole. Present levels in vocabulary and comprehension, not grade, decide fit. Start with the two devices the class is using.

Baseline
Give one mixed probe and record the error pattern by device. Students often call any comparison a simile and miss personification entirely. Keep the vocabulary in each sentence at the student's independent level.
Tips
Naming the device is a step toward explaining its meaning and effect, which comprehension and rd-lit-010 cover. Mix the order of devices and use fresh sentences each probe.
Limits
Naming a device does not show the student can explain what it means. Students with language needs may recognize the device and still read the meaning literally; check meaning separately.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 12 sentences from instructional-level texts, each containing a simile, metaphor, personification or hyperbole, the student will name the device in each sentence and underline the words that make it independently with at least 80% accuracy on figurative language sentences, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 35% accuracy.
