Say a word without its first sound

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For first-grade students who isolate first sounds but cannot delete one to make a new word (say meat without /m/). Present levels from a manipulation probe decide fit.

Baseline
Use words where the answer is a real word for baseline (seat to eat). Note whether the student drops the wrong sound or the whole onset of a blend.
Tips
Teach with tiles, then fade to oral only. The core manipulation template mixes deletion and substitution; this one isolates first-sound deletion for students who need a smaller step.
Limits
Real-word answers can be guessed; made-up answers show the skill more clearly.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken one-syllable word and the direction to say it without its first sound, where the answer is a real word, the student will say the word that is left independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Awareness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
