Say a word without its last sound

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who delete first sounds but miss final sounds (say beet without /t/), which often shows up as missing final letters in spelling. Present levels decide readiness.

Baseline
Start with CVC words that leave a real word (seat to sea). Note whether the student deletes the final sound or the whole rime.
Tips
Link to spelling: students who drop final sounds in speech tasks often leave off final letters too.
Limits
Final stop sounds are hard to hear; speak clearly without adding a vowel.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 spoken one-syllable words, each with the direction to say it without its last sound, the student will say the word that is left independently with at least 85% accuracy on final-sound deletion items, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.
