Add a sound to make a new word

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For first-grade students who delete sounds but cannot add one (add /s/ to the beginning of top), a skill that supports reading and spelling blends. Present levels decide fit.

Baseline
Probe beginning and end additions separately. Adding to make a blend (top to stop) is harder than adding to a vowel (am to ham).
Tips
Pairs with the deletion templates. Words that become blends prepare students for reading blends.
Limits
Real-word results can be guessed; include some made-up results.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken one-syllable word and the direction to add a named sound to the beginning, the student will say the new word independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
