Yes or no sound judgments

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who use yes and no as their most reliable responses (a head shake, two buttons, or two cards), who are ready to show sound awareness. Present levels in communication decide the response mode.

Baseline
Balance yes and no items and mix the order, because yes or no gives 50% by chance. A score at or near half shows guessing. Confirm the response mode is reliable with known questions first.
Tips
Very accessible format for students with complex communication needs. Move to picture choice or letter boards when the student is ready.
Limits
Chance success is high; use 12 or more items and look for steady scores well above half.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken word and a yes or no question about its first or last sound (such as whether sun starts with /s/), the student will answer yes or no using their reliable response mode independently in at least 11 of 12 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 6 of 12 opportunities.
