Show sound counts in a class warm-up

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who do well in small-group sound work but drop out of the whole-class phonemic awareness warm-up, where everyone responds together. A finger signal gives the student an observable way to take every turn. Present levels decide fit.

Baseline
Observe 10 items in a warm-up. Score a response correct when it is on time and right; copying a peer late counts as not independent. Note whether the student responds at all.
Tips
Builds access to core instruction. Ask the classroom teacher to use the same signal every day.
Limits
Observation in a large group is hard; sit where the student's hand can be seen. Finger counts show counting, not each sound.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 10-minute whole-class phonemic awareness warm-up, when the teacher says a word and the class shows the number of sounds, the student will hold up the number of fingers or the card that matches the number of sounds in the word independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed warm-ups, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Awareness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
