Swap the first sounds of two words
When to use this goal
For upper-elementary students with solid single-word manipulation who need a harder, playful challenge: swapping first sounds across two words (big cat becomes cig bat). Present levels decide fit.
- Baseline
- Score correct only when both new words are right. Note whether memory or manipulation is the barrier by repeating items.
- Tips
- Students enjoy the silly results. Keep it short, at the end of a lesson.
- Limits
- Heavy on working memory; scores may reflect memory as much as sound skill.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
