Turn the page when the adult finishes reading

PKOpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For preschool students who turn pages before the adult finishes or never take a turn, so they are not yet linking the words read to the page. Present levels in turn-taking during play decide fit.

Baseline
Read a 10-page book and record each page: turned on time, turned early, or not turned. Turning early counts as a miss because the goal is linking the turn to the end of the print.
Tips
Choose books with a short line of print on each page so the end is easy to hear. Pausing with an expectant look signals the turn without a word. Students with motor needs can use page fluffers or a switch-adapted e-book (rd-pc-015).
Limits
Measures timing of the page turn, not attention to print. Some students turn quickly out of interest in the next picture, which is fine at first.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during one-to-one shared reading of a picture book when the adult reads the last word on a page and pauses, the student will turn to the next page at the pause independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Print Concepts & Early Literacy.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
