Answer print questions with an AAC device
When to use this goal
For young students who use AAC and are often skipped during concepts-of-print questions because they cannot point or speak quickly. Present levels in finding vocabulary on their device decide fit.
- Baseline
- Work with the SLP to add print concept words to the device before baseline. Model each word during reading for a few weeks first (aided language input). Allow enough wait time and record it.
- Tips
- Pair device answers with pointing to the book when possible, so the answer is tied to the page. Every adult reading with the student should model on the device.
- Limits
- Device navigation and print knowledge are both measured; separate them with a navigation check. Some questions are hard to answer with a single button; keep them simple.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during shared reading, when the adult asks 8 print questions (such as which way do I go, where do I start, is this a letter or a word) and the device has a print concepts page, the student will answer each print question by selecting the matching button on the print concepts page independently with at least 75% accuracy on print concept questions, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 25% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Print Concepts & Early Literacy.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
