Point to dictated words on a class chart

K-2, PKOpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who dictate ideas for a class chart but do not connect their spoken words to the print written down. Present levels in dictating a short sentence decide fit.

Baseline
Collect five dictations over a week or two. Count an opportunity when the student points to the print (not the drawing) and moves along it while saying the sentence, even if pointing does not match word by word.
Tips
This shows that print holds a message the student made. Read the chart together often. Students who use AAC can compose on their device and point to the printed result.
Limits
Students recall their own sentence, so this is not reading. Long dictations are harder to point to; keep them to one sentence.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after the student dictates a sentence that the adult writes on a class experience chart, the student will point to the words of their dictated sentence while saying it back independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Print Concepts & Early Literacy.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
