Pretend-read a familiar book page by page
When to use this goal
For preschool students who flip through favorite books without telling the story, or tell it with no link to the pages. Present levels in retelling a familiar story with pictures decide fit. This is emergent reading, not decoding.
- Baseline
- Record five book looks. An opportunity counts when the student tells something about at least most pages in order. Note any book language (once upon a time, said the bear), a sign that the student knows books sound different from talk.
- Tips
- Repeated read-alouds make this possible; read the target book often. Accept the student's home language and AAC. Families can record a pretend-read to share progress.
- Limits
- Depends on how familiar the book is. The goal shows emergent reading behavior, not print knowledge such as tracking.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during independent book time with a book read aloud to the class at least 3 times, the student will tell the story page by page using book language, turning each page and saying what happens on it independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Print Concepts & Early Literacy.
Met: Level of support. Defined.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
