Next-day check of newly mapped words

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who read new high-frequency words during the lesson but cannot read them the next day, which shows the mapping step is not sticking. Retention after a delay is the measure. Fit depends on present levels showing phoneme segmentation and letter-sound knowledge.

Baseline
Track next-day reading of the five words from several lessons. Compare with same-day reading. A big drop overnight suggests more mapping practice and fewer new words per lesson.
Tips
Fewer words mapped well beats many words practiced by sight. Record which words fail the next-day check and remap them.
Limits
Next-day reading shows short-term retention; cumulative review shows longer-term. Delay length varies by schedule; note it.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, the day after a lesson in which 5 new high-frequency words were mapped with sound boxes and letter tiles, the student will read each newly mapped word aloud when it is shown independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected after each mapping lesson.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sight Word Recognition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
