Give a synonym or antonym for a word
When to use this goal
For students with limited word flexibility, who know one word for an idea and cannot supply another or its opposite, which shows in both reading and writing. Base the choice on language assessment; coordinate with the speech-language pathologist when the student has language services.
- Baseline
- Probe synonyms and antonyms separately; antonyms are usually easier for young students and synonyms for older ones. Write an answer key with several acceptable responses per item. Note whether the student gives an associated word (hot for stove) instead of a synonym, which is a common pattern.
- Tips
- The sentence condition connects the skill to writing revision and reading. Teach shades of meaning (big, large, huge) once basic synonyms are steady. Keep the word list at the student's level so the task measures relationships, not unknown words.
- Limits
- Few words have exact synonyms; accept close ones and say so. Responses depend on expressive vocabulary. Does not measure word learning from text.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 spoken or printed words at the student's level and the direction to give a synonym for each, the student will say or write a word with the same meaning independently with at least 80% accuracy on synonym and antonym items, on 3 of 4 consecutive probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
