Read and explain common abbreviations and acronyms
When to use this goal
For students who stall on the shortened forms that fill schedules, forms, labels, and texts (ASAP, Dr., Ave., mph, FAQ, etc.) and cannot say what they stand for. Base the choice on functional reading data and observation; this is a practical goal for secondary and transition-age students.
- Baseline
- Collect the abbreviations from the student's own environment: school schedule, job site, forms, medication labels, and messages. Score the reading (how it is said) and the meaning separately, since some are read as words (NASA) and some as letters (FBI). Keep a tally by category.
- Tips
- A small, finite set with daily payoff. Teach by category and in the documents where they appear. A personal list is a reasonable long-term support.
- Limits
- New acronyms appear constantly, especially in messaging; the goal covers a taught set. Some abbreviations differ by context (St. for street and saint). Not a general vocabulary measure.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 common abbreviations and acronyms in print, the student will read each abbreviation aloud as it is usually said and state what it stands for independently with at least 90% accuracy on abbreviation items, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 35% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
