Explain math terms with a drawing or example

When to use this goal

For students whose math errors come from not knowing what the terms mean (product, quotient, perimeter, area, denominator). Fit depends on present levels showing the student can do the math when the term is explained.

Baseline
Use terms from units already taught, so the score reflects word knowledge, not new content. Note whether the student mixes up paired terms (area and perimeter).
Tips
Share results with the math teacher. Drawings are often the clearest evidence for students with language needs.
Limits
Explaining a term is not the same as using it in a problem. The rubric needs sample answers so scorers agree.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 5 math terms from the current unit, the student will explain each term with a drawing, a worked example, or a short definition in their own words independently, earning a score of at least 8 out of 10 on a math vocabulary rubric (5 terms, each scored 0 to 2), on 3 of 4 consecutive unit checks, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected at the end of each math unit.

Baseline: 3 out of 10 rubric points.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rubric score fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Rubric scoring gives rubric score data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
