Find a defined word on an AAC device
When to use this goal
For students who use a speech-generating device or communication book and are learning curriculum words stored on it. The goal shows word meaning and device navigation together. Present levels in AAC use decide how many pages deep the words can be.
- Baseline
- Record whether errors are wrong words or wrong locations; that tells you whether meaning or navigation is the barrier. Make sure the word set is programmed consistently before baseline.
- Tips
- Plan with the SLP so new unit words are added in the same place each time. Use the same words in class so the student hears them modeled on the device.
- Limits
- Motor access affects speed and accuracy; note the access method. Shows recognition of meaning, not spontaneous use.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken student-friendly definition of a unit word stored on the student's device, the student will navigate to and select the word on the device that matches the definition independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
