Ask before guessing what a peer wants

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who decide for others (what game to play, what someone likes) without checking. Present levels decide fit. Asking is a reliable way to learn another person's view and works for every student.

Baseline
Record 5 moments when the student chose for a peer and whether they asked first. Planned game choices can supply opportunities.
Tips
Count the ask when it comes before the choice and the student uses the answer. Asking can be spoken, signed, written, or on a device.
Limits
Opportunities depend on the schedule. The goal does not measure negotiation when the two want different things; that belongs in conflict-resolution.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during centers, a partner project, or a game choice, when the student is about to choose something for a peer or for both of them, the student will ask the peer what they want or like before choosing, then use the answer independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Awareness & Perspective Taking.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
