Tell when someone is joking

3-5, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who miss jokes, react to them as serious, or are unsure whether to laugh. Present levels decide fit. Clues include laughing, an impossible or silly statement, and the way the person says it.

Baseline
Use 10 scenes of school-age humor. Score the judgment and a clue. Note whether the student laughs at serious lines or not at jokes.
Tips
The student does not have to find jokes funny. The goal is telling a joke from a serious statement so they can respond as they choose. Puns and wordplay belong in vocabulary-semantics.
Limits
Humor varies by culture and group. Scenes are simpler than real conversation.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 short scenes of peers talking, half including a joke and half serious, the student will say whether the person is joking or serious and name one clue independently with at least 80% accuracy on joke or serious scenes, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
