Notice when a listener has lost interest

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who talk at length about a topic without noticing signs that the listener wants a turn or a change. Present levels decide fit. Clues include short answers, turning away, starting another task, or saying "okay" repeatedly. Interests are valued; the goal is noticing the listener.

Baseline
Record 5 moments in conversation when the listener showed loss of interest and whether the student noticed and responded. Agree with the listener on what signals they will give.
Tips
Teach students they can ask the listener directly; asking is as good as reading the signal. Respect the student's interests: the goal is a fair exchange, not dropping the topic forever. Conversation skills (topic shifts, turn length) belong in pragmatic-language.
Limits
Listeners give different signals; the listener's words are the most reliable. The goal does not measure conversation quality.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 5-minute conversation with a peer or adult about a topic the student picked, the student will notice the listener's signals and respond by asking a question, checking in ("Want to hear more?"), or giving the listener a turn independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Awareness & Perspective Taking.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
