Read a group's activity before joining

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who join groups at moments that do not work for the group (in the middle of a game, during a private conversation). Present levels decide fit. Reading the group means noticing what it is doing and choosing a time to ask.

Baseline
Record 5 joining attempts and whether the student read the group first. Video scenes can supply practice data; label them.
Tips
The student can always ask "Can I join?"; reading the group helps choose when. Groups that refuse every time need adult support for inclusion, not more skill teaching.
Limits
Peer responses are outside the student's control. Joining and keeping play going belong in peer-interaction and play-social-participation.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at recess or lunch, when the student wants to join a group of peers, the student will watch the group briefly, name what it is doing, and ask to join at a break in the activity independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Awareness & Perspective Taking.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
