Interpret hints and indirect requests

9-12, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For older students who answer indirect requests literally ("Can you get the door?" answered with "Yes") or miss hints from teachers, coworkers, or friends. Present levels decide fit.

Baseline
Use 10 scenarios from the student's settings. Score correct when the meaning and a fitting response are given.
Tips
Asking "Do you want me to...?" is always a fine response. Teach adults that direct requests also help.
Limits
Hints vary by culture and family. The goal does not measure following through on the request.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 short scenarios with an indirect request or hint at school, home, or work (such as "It's getting cold in here"), the student will say what the speaker is really asking for and a response that fits independently with at least 80% accuracy on indirect request scenarios, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Awareness & Perspective Taking.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
