Name likely emotions when faces are hidden
When to use this goal
For students who rely on faces and get stuck when a face is hidden, turned away, or hard to read, even though the situation makes the emotion clear. Present levels, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Give the 10-scene probe and record each answer and reason. Note whether the student answers with the emotion they themselves would have rather than the person's; that is common and worth teaching to directly.
- Tips
- Accept any emotion that fits the scene and comes with a reason. This route helps students who find faces hard, since the situation is often the clearest clue. Move to real classroom events once the student scores well on pictures.
- Limits
- Scenes have expected answers, but real people react differently from one another; teach that the situation gives a good guess, not a certainty. The goal does not show the student responds to others' emotions (see se-aw-046).

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 picture scenes in which faces are hidden or turned away (such as a dropped lunch tray, a lost game, a surprise party), the student will name the emotion a person in the scene would likely have and the part of the situation that tells them independently with at least 80% accuracy on picture scenes, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Awareness & Perspective Taking.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
