Greet familiar people and respond to their greetings

PK, K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who walk past greetings or do not respond when greeted, in any mode. Base the choice on observation at arrival. A wave, a sign, a device message, or a spoken word all count; eye contact is not required.

Baseline
Record 5 greeting opportunities each day for 3 days (arrival, entering specials, a peer saying hi) and note whether the student responded, initiated, or neither, and in what mode. Ask the family how the student greets people at home.
Tips
An opportunity is a greeting directed at the student, or the student entering a room where a familiar person is within a few feet. Score correct when a greeting form occurs within 5 seconds, in any mode. Do not score looking, smiling, or tone. Coach peers to greet the student and wait. Keep the greeting message on the device home page.
Limits
Greetings are brief and easy to miss; station the observer at arrival. Some students greet only when prompted by the routine, so vary the setting across probes. Does not measure what happens after the greeting.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Functional Communication.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
