Join a conversation at a pause with a related comment
When to use this goal
For students who interrupt mid-sentence, change the topic abruptly, or stand at the edge of a group without entering. Base the choice on observation in group conversations. The comment can be spoken, signed, or from a device; the key skills are timing and relevance.
- Baseline
- Observe 5 attempts to join a group conversation (structured or natural) and record the timing (at a pause or mid-sentence) and relevance (related or unrelated to the topic). Ask peers, if appropriate, how it goes when the student joins; their experience helps define the target.
- Tips
- An opportunity is each attempt to join (the student starts to speak or activates the device while others are talking). Score correct when the entry occurs at a pause of at least 1 second and the comment relates to the current topic. Related means it connects to what was just said, even loosely; score generously. Topic changes signaled with a phrase ("Different topic, but...") count as correct once the student has demonstrated related entries.
- Limits
- Judging a pause and relevance needs a shared definition; two observers should practice together. Group conversations move fast and peers interrupt each other too, so do not hold the student to a stricter standard than peers. Processing time differences may require accepting slightly late entries.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when two or more peers are talking and the student wants to join, the student will wait for a pause and then make a comment or ask a question related to the group's current topic independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during structured practice plus one natural setting.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
