Respond to a peer's apology or correction with an accepting statement
When to use this goal
For students who respond to a peer's apology with "no you're not" or continued anger, or who argue when a peer points out a mistake. Base the choice on observation. Accepting means a short acknowledging statement, not pretending nothing happened.
- Baseline
- Record 5 or more apologies or peer corrections the student receives (observed or role-played) and code the response: accepting statement, silence and continued activity, arguing, or escalation. Note whether corrections from certain peers are harder.
- Tips
- An opportunity is an apology or correction from a peer. Score correct when the student responds with an accepting statement or a single clarifying question within 10 seconds and continues the activity without arguing, insulting, or leaving. Saying nothing and continuing is scored as not demonstrated while the skill is new, since peers need a response. Still being upset is allowed.
- Limits
- Peer corrections can be wrong or unkind; the goal does not require the student to agree with an unfair correction, only to respond without arguing in the moment. Natural opportunities are sparse; role-play fills in. Does not measure whether the conflict was resolved.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when a peer apologizes to them after a conflict or accident, the student will respond with an accepting statement (such as "Okay," "Thanks for saying that," "You're right, my turn was over") and continue the activity independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly, combining observed events and role-play probes.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
