Propose a compromise that gives each person part of what they want

When to use this goal

For secondary students who see conflicts as win or lose and either give in completely or refuse to budge. Base the choice on observation in group decisions. Builds on se-cr-003 (generating solutions) by using the skill in real negotiations.

Baseline
Observe 3 or more disagreements over wants (natural or structured) and record whether the student proposed a compromise, gave in, insisted, or disengaged. Ask the student what a fair outcome looks like to them; some students have never been shown that both can get something.
Tips
An opportunity is a disagreement over wants between the student and a peer. Score correct when the student proposes an option that includes something for each person, within the conversation and without insults or threats. The peer does not have to accept it. Teach a few compromise patterns (turns, split time, combine ideas, trade). Do not score tone.
Limits
Peers who refuse all compromises make the skill feel useless; practice first with cooperative partners. Structured practice may not transfer to heated real disagreements; label the data source. Does not measure whether the compromise was followed.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when they and a peer want different things during group work, a game, or planning an activity, the student will propose a compromise that includes something each person wants (such as "We do your idea first, then mine," "Half the time on each game") independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly through structured practice plus observed disagreements.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Conflict Resolution.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
