Accept a group decision that went against their preference
When to use this goal
For students who refuse to participate, argue at length, or leave when a group vote or choice does not go their way. Base the choice on observation during group decisions. One statement of disagreement is allowed; the goal is following the decision afterward.
- Baseline
- Observe 5 group decisions that went against the student's preference and record the response: joins with or without one statement, argues repeatedly, refuses, or leaves. Set up structured votes to supply opportunities. Note whether losing a vote and losing a game produce similar reactions.
- Tips
- An opportunity is a group decision that went against the student's stated or evident preference. Score correct when the student makes no more than one disagreement statement and joins the chosen activity within 2 minutes, without refusing or leaving. Asking when their option can be chosen is a good move and counts. Make sure the student's option is chosen sometimes; fairness over time supports the skill.
- Limits
- Group decisions vary in how much they matter to the student; record the stakes. Repeated losses can make the goal feel punitive, so plan rotating choices. Does not measure participation quality after joining.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when a group vote, teacher choice, or peer decision selects an option other than the student's preference, the student will state agreement or one disagreement statement and then take part in the chosen activity independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during group decisions and games.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
