Handle a hurtful online message with a plan

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who reply to hurtful posts or messages in anger, which often grows into bigger conflicts at school. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. Use school platforms and realistic mock messages; the student never has to share private accounts.

Baseline
Show five mock messages of varying hurtfulness and ask the student to show or say what they would do. Ask what happened the last time a message upset them. Record which replies would escalate and which would not.
Tips
Build the plan with the student; the options and their order are theirs. Score correct when the response is any non-escalating plan step. Threats and harassment always go to an adult; saving a screenshot and telling an adult is a strong choice.
Limits
Most online conflict happens outside school, so data are mostly scenario-based; families can log real events if they want to. Serious harassment, threats, or exploitation follow the school's safety procedures, not this goal.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during scenario practice with realistic mock messages, posts, or comments on a school device, the student will use their online conflict plan by pausing before replying, then choosing to ignore, block, save a screenshot, report, or send one calm reply independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Conflict Resolution.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
