Respond to adult correction or a consequence without escalating
When to use this goal
For students who argue, yell, or leave when an adult corrects them or gives a consequence, so a small correction becomes a large incident. Base the choice on incident data. The planned response is short; questions and later discussion are allowed.
- Baseline
- Observe or collect staff reports on 5 or more corrections and consequences and code the response: acknowledges and continues, asks a question, argues, yells, leaves, or escalates further. Note how corrections are delivered; public or harsh corrections produce worse responses and should change too.
- Tips
- An opportunity is a correction or consequence delivered by an adult. Score correct when the student's response within 10 seconds is an acknowledgment or a single question and they continue or comply, without arguing, insults, or leaving. Asking to talk later is a success, and adults must follow through. Deliver corrections privately and briefly; the data will show whether adult delivery matters.
- Limits
- Corrections vary in fairness and delivery; record both or the data blame the student for adult behavior. Opportunities depend on how often the student is corrected, which should decrease over time. Does not address whether the correction was warranted.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when an adult corrects their work or behavior, or gives a consequence, the student will respond with an acknowledgment (such as "okay," a nod) or one question, and continue the activity or follow the consequence independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 4 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly, combining observed corrections and staff reports.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
