Cope when a planned event is cancelled

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who escalate for long periods when something they were looking forward to is cancelled or postponed (a field trip, outdoor recess, a game, a visit). Present levels decide fit, not grade. The student picks their coping steps.

Baseline
Gather staff and family reports of past cancellations and how the student responded. Because real cancellations are rare, run 3 scenario practices to see what the student can plan when calm.
Tips
Score correct when the student names the disappointment and starts a coping step within about 5 minutes. Being upset is expected and is not scored against the student. Tell the student about cancellations as early as possible and explain the reason.
Limits
Few real opportunities occur in a year, so scenario data carry much of the measurement; report them separately. The goal does not replace advance notice.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when a planned or preferred event is cancelled or postponed during the school day, the student will name the disappointment in their own words or mode and choose one coping step from their list (such as asking when it will happen instead, choosing a different activity, taking a short break) independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, across 2 consecutive grading periods, as measured by direct observation collected at each cancellation, with monthly scenario practice.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Emotional Regulation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
