Respond to a setback by naming it and a next step
When to use this goal
For older students who withdraw, quit, or lash out after a setback such as a low grade, a job rejection, not making a team, or a failed driving or work test. Present levels decide fit, not grade. Builds coping for adult life, where setbacks are often private.
- Baseline
- Review recent setbacks with the student and staff: what happened, what the student did afterward, and how long it affected school or work. Run 2 or 3 scenario practices to see what next steps the student can name when calm.
- Tips
- Score correct when the student shares the setback and states a realistic next step within the school day. Sadness or anger about a setback is normal and is not scored. The student chooses who the trusted person is.
- Limits
- Many setbacks are private and never reach staff, so real opportunities undercount. The goal does not measure whether the next step was taken; track that separately if useful.

- Record up to 4 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
