Name the emotion they had once calm

When to use this goal

For students who can point to an emotion picture when calm but cannot yet look back and show what they went through during an upset. Present levels and communication mode, not grade, decide fit.

Baseline
For two weeks, offer the chart after each upset that settles and record what the student showed and in what mode. Note how long after the upset the debrief happened; some students need 20 minutes or more before they can look back.
Tips
Wait until the student is fully settled; asking too soon can restart the upset. Count any mode. Keep the debrief short and never tie it to a consequence, or the student learns to give whatever answer ends the talk.
Limits
Looking back is harder than naming an emotion in the moment, and some students cannot recall it at first. The goal does not measure whether upsets become less frequent. If upsets are rare, add practice with recent events from the student's day so there are enough opportunities.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after an upset, once the student has settled, with a feelings chart that shows faces and words, the student will point to, say, sign, or select on the feelings chart the emotion they had during the upset and the emotion they have now independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected after each upset, reviewed weekly.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
