Accept a peer's no and choose another option
When to use this goal
For students who respond to a peer's refusal (to play, trade, or share) by insisting, following the peer, or becoming upset. Base the choice on observation during free play. Pairs with se-peer-003 (joining a group), where accepting no is the last step.
- Baseline
- Observe recess and centers and record each peer refusal the student receives and the response: accepts and moves on, repeats the request, follows the peer, or becomes upset. Add 3 planned practices with a coached peer so there are enough opportunities.
- Tips
- An opportunity is a clear no from a peer. Score correct when the student makes an accepting statement (or none) and moves to another peer or activity within 1 minute, without repeating the request more than once or showing behaviors defined in the plan as escalation. Brief frustration is fine. Peers should be taught to say no kindly and to say yes sometimes.
- Limits
- Peer refusals are unpredictable and sometimes unkind; the goal measures the student's response, not the peer's behavior. Planned practice should be limited so the student is not repeatedly refused. Does not measure the quality of the alternative activity.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when a peer declines their invitation, request, or offer during recess or centers, the student will accept the refusal with a short statement (such as "Okay," "Maybe later") and choose another peer or activity within 1 minute independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly during recess and centers.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
