Ask a classmate a question after they share

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who listen to classmates' shares but never respond, or who answer every share with their own story. Present levels in questioning and turn-taking decide fit. Questions can be spoken, signed, written on a card, or selected on a device.

Baseline
Across 4 sharing times, record whether the student asked the sharer a question, made a comment about themselves, or did not respond. Check that the student can form a question with a question word in a structured task first.
Tips
An opportunity is a share the student hears and is invited to respond to. Score correct when the question is about the shared item or story. A related comment instead of a question can be recorded separately. Make sure the sharing routine gives every child a chance to ask, not just the fastest hands.
Limits
Opportunities depend on the class routine; keep the number of invitations steady. The goal does not measure the quality of follow-up conversation. Students who process language slowly may need the share shown again or a short wait.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a sharing routine when a classmate shows an object, picture, or piece of work, the student will ask the classmate a question about what they shared independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during sharing routines.

Baseline: 1 of 4 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Peer Interaction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
