Share interest facts with peers at an interest group
When to use this goal
For students with a strong interest (trains, animals, drawing, a game) who talk about it with adults but not with peers. An interest group built around that topic gives peers a reason to talk. Present levels decide fit. Shares can be spoken, shown, typed, or presented from a device.
- Baseline
- Record shares directed to peers in the first 2 or 3 meetings, along with comments made only to the adult. Ask the student what they want peers to know about the topic.
- Tips
- Count shares aimed at a peer or the group, not the adult. Long monologues count once; note them so the group can work on turn-taking. Let the student help plan meetings. The interest belongs to the student; never use it only as a reward.
- Limits
- Group makeup matters; peers with the same interest give more natural replies. The goal measures sharing, not two-way conversation; add a question or reply measure later.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a weekly lunch-time interest group built around a topic the student chose, the student will share a fact, picture, or piece of their work about the shared interest with a peer in the group independently at least 3 times per 25-minute interest group meeting, across 4 consecutive meetings, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly.
Baseline: 0 times per 25-minute interest group meeting.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Peer Interaction.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 25-minute interest group meeting.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
