Find a shared interest with a new peer

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who stay with one topic with every peer, or who never learn what a new peer likes. Present levels decide fit. Questions and answers can be spoken, typed, or signed.

Baseline
Set up 3 or 4 conversations with peers they do not know well and record whether the student asked about interests and found a match. Note if the student only talked about their own interest.
Tips
Score correct when the student names a real shared interest, aloud or in writing. Their own strong interest can be the match if the peer shares it. Rotate peers so it is a skill, not a script with one person.
Limits
Planned conversations are needed to get steady data. The goal does not measure whether a friendship forms.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a structured get-to-know-you activity with a peer they do not know well, the student will ask the peer about their interests and name one interest they both share independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, across 2 consecutive months, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice monthly.

Baseline: 1 of 4 opportunities.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Peer Interaction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
